Mimic: A Healer's Rite - Page 3 - Progress

Some in progress work for page 3 of my Mimic: A Healer’s Rite comic!  It features Dove and the first big shot of the “Guardian Spirit of Healers” who is basically their deity of health and illness.

In the comic, Dove must prove to him that she deserves to continue her training to become a master healer, so that her teacher will allow her to continue her studies.

I’ve never really drawn creatures before, so I am very happy with him so far!

Here's the first page of my "Willow" comic!  It's setting up the scene as you can see Willow's tent set up in her tree.  I digitally drew and colored this page in Photoshop, and I am pretty proud of it!

Fairy Comic | Willow | Panel Preview

Here's a preview of one of the panels for my "Willow" comic.  It has been drawn digitally in Photoshop with a tablet.  I've been trying to find a medium that suits my artwork, an I am really liking working digitally so far, because it is so forgiving.

Here is the cover of my Fairy comic that will be used as a tag for a costume I will be making.  The title is "Willow" which is both the name of the fairy and the tree which I based her design off of.  This is a digital drawing entirely made in Photoshop.

Platypus Progress | Base Colored Pencil Layer Added

I finished this layer a while ago, but I just finally got in to scan it.  It's for the Platypus Comic, and here, you can see the base coloring I did with Prisma colored pencils to go under the watercolor.  Mostly this layer is just to set up the colors and how they help with the depth of the image.  Oh, and this is just pages 2-6.  Page one is finished, so I did not include it in this post, but you can see it in the last post I did here: http://nicolestammart.blogspot.com/2014/02/platypus-process-stages.html.

Platypus | Process Stages

Here's my Platypus comic in the various stages its undergone since the beginning.  I'm focusing on one page for now (page 4), to make it easier to see.

 I started off with tiny thumbnails on sticky notes pasted into a sketchbook originally, and then once I was settled on this design, I drew the image onto a 11x17 inch of Bristol.  This is the final layout of this page, but if you look closely, you can probably see the remnants of the four or five different versions this page went through.

 This page gave me so much trouble that I actually scanned it in and played with it in Photoshop, so that I could be sure the layout was reading well.

Then finally, once my drawings were correct on the Bristol, I taped the Bristol to the back of a sheet of watercolor paper and traced the drawing on a light table.  This run over I added all the texture and detail, and it allowed my drawing to be crisp and clean as all the back drawing was on the bristol and not my final piece.

 

And finally, I have started to add the color.  This piece is ultimately going to be a mixture of colored pencil and watercolor.  The layers being: pencil - colored pencil -watercolor paint - then another layer of the colored pencil.  I've never done anything like this, so the experimenting will be fun!

Offically signed up for the Merits Show at my school! - Platypus!

So the merits show at MCAD is a pretty awesome event.  Any student can sign up, and when you do you go reserve wall space for that week, put your work up for the show, and then it is judged.  It's nice, because putting up your art in a show is really just great practice (it's also something I've never done before), and the judges will pick winners at the end (there are several awards given out in each department), and the awards come with Scholarships.

My goal for this is really just to have a nice looking exhibit to showcase my work, and my focus is to finish and showcase my Platypus Comic (the first page is shown above), and the other pages still need to be colored with watercolor and colored pencil.  I really love this comic.  It's a sweet little tale about a Platypus getting a present for his mother and is geared mostly towards younger readers.  It's from my Comic Storytelling Class last semester.
